Betamax and Betacord Videos have been around since the mid 1970's. Beta video tapes were, for a long time in a constant battle with VHS tapes for world market share. In the end VHS Video won the war and eventually consumer grade Beta Video players withdrew from the market even though Beta video was widely considered by many to be a superior quality video format.
Many people who have Beta tapes stored away in the house, have no way of playing the tapes anymore, unlike VHS tapes, so in order to view once again, they need to be transferred to DVD.
Beta videos will tend to degrade in quality over time depending on
how many times a Video tape has been played, and the condition of the VCR. Other factors such as the location of Video tape can also effect it's quality today ( Storing videos against an outside wall or in damp areas of the house may cause mold or mildew to grow on the tape, causing adverse results when playing the video )
